It’s really important, when we set the tone for what this documentary series is, that it’s not a documentary series about Black people.
“That’s our argument: You can’t understand the story of America without understanding the story of slavery and Black Americans. “This is the story of America,” Hannah-Jones says. The 1619 Project since expanded into a limited docuseries, now streaming on Hulu. The ongoing initiative aims to reframe the country’s history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans at the center of the national narrative. In 2019, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the beginning of slavery in the United States, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones launched The 1619 Project in the pages of The New York Times Magazine.
